Music. It Does A Body Good.
Steve here, taking a moment to post some of my observations. I have been a customer of B. D. Riley's Irish Pub almost since it opened back in 2000. A couple of years back I started helping out with the marketing and the website, and before I knew it I was managing here. I really like the pub, and it's place on 6th. One of the things that comes though loud and clear is our commitment to live music on 6th Street, at a time when too many cool clubs are closing, or switching to DJ format or jukeboxes.
With the addition of our Open Mic night (or is Open MIKE easier on the eyes?) we now have live music five nights a week at the Pub. Except for Monday, and Quiz night on Wednesday, you can hear a wide variety of LIVE music for free almost any night you stop in.
Last week we had people from Maryland enjoying the Blues, folks from Wimberley dancing to Irish Rock, and a really nice heavily-pierced SoCo couple enjoying a band covering "Head Like a Hole." From the Dealers to Doak Short, from the Zydeco fusion of the Dr. Zog Band to the Delta 'Lectric blues of Joe Richardson, to the southern rock stylings of the Zak Perry Band to the guitar wizardry of Eric Tessmer, we try to book a cool mix of talented musicians and actually pay them, despite never charging a cover.
We're serious about keeping the Music in the "Live Music Capital of the World."
I've really enjoyed sitting in on a few Open Mic nights--the talent in this city amazes me. I look forward to seeing Johnny Fargo put together a triple bill ofsome of these emerging artists for an upcoming night of music at the Pub. Do yourself a favor, drag a friend downtown to a spot like the Saxon, or Red-Eyed Fly, Flamingo Cantina or even the Pub to support some local musicians. Buy a beer, buy a CD, tell another friend, and keep the tunes coming.

Introducing the Blog--and Johnny Fargo
It's a 'blog--a weblog, and from time to time you'll see notes about music at the pub, life on 6th Street, and the bar and music business in general. Your comments are important--feel free, no, feel obligated--to add your thoughts. Your Open Stage host Johnny Fargo will be posting the bulk of the items here--get to know him up close and personal every Tuesday night at the pub, when he hosts "Open Stage at B. D. Riley's."
